THE CHARACTER
FULL NAME: Gwen Cooper
SERIES/FANDOM: Torchwood
AGE: 31
GENDER: Female
SPECIES: Human
SEXUALITY: Bisexual
ALIGNMENT: Good
PERSONALITY: Gwen Cooper is a woman who is curious and has a bit of an empathic nature. Even before joining Torchwood, she was concerned with doing the right thing, hence joining the police force when she was younger. Eventually her curiosity gets her noticed by Torchwood, and put in danger both. Most of the time, Gwen has a very hard time letting go of things that she cannot control, wanting to go the extra step to figure something out, or to help someone even if it means way too much danger. Too often Jack, or someone else tells her to stop looking into something, but she goes ahead and does what she wants regardless of the consequences. Eventually though, when it comes down to it, she's been learning to actually know when to hold back, and making really hard choices, even when it comes with results that she doesn't necessarily like.
She can be incredibly stubborn, like the time she refused to give her boyfriend Rhys the amnesia pill, and to tell him about her working for Torchwood. She really wants to make her relationship work because she sees that everyone else doesn't have anyone else on the outside that they can share things with and they seem pretty miserable. Though she has had feelings for both Jack and Owen, it's really Rhys that she loves and wants to be with to the point of marrying him. Sometimes she often gets her feelings confused because they tend to overwhelm her when she feels them. In that way she's slightly empathic, though it's not really an ability of any kind. She's just overemotional at times, and it most certainly clouds her judgment. But it also comes in handy, like when her emotions are needed to use the Resurrection Glove.
Working with Torchwood has made her more confident in her abilities as an investigator, and as a leader. When Jack was gone with the Doctor, she took over as leader of Torchwood and actually did a pretty good job. When Owen and Tosh were both killed, it was devastating to her, but it gave her a new will to live. Later on when the Dalek's invaded Earth, she was determined not to let them go out without a fight. However she's not without her other faults. She's had a couple of affairs that she's not proud of at all. One with a man named James Mayer, during a time when she was split up with Rhys, and once with Owen that didn't last for very long. Having such a stressful job and being unable to talk to anyone about what was going on, and not being able to share her feelings with anyone else, she turned to others for comfort.
She also has unwavering faith in the people she works with. When Jack died, she stayed by his side and was sure that he was going to come back to life. She believes wholeheartedly that though other Torchwood's haven't done things maybe in the best way, that they're protecting the rift in Cardiff and doing the best that they can to protect the people and get ready for whatever else might be coming. There is no shortage of just how nosy she can be, and ultimately she tends to stick her nose into other people's business where it doesn't belong. It's rare that she knocks on doors, and she asks too many questions.
It's really hard for her to say she's wrong, or admit when she's made a mistake. She has a very strong sense of pride that often gets her into trouble. She's always adamant that she's right.
ABILITIES: Thanks to Torchwood (and more importantly Jack) she knows how to use a gun. She also knows how to use several pieces of alien technology, such as the Resurrection Glove and knows how to distribute amnesia pills. She can also speak Welsh fluently, but has no special or supernatural abilities of any kind.
WHY HAS YOUR CHARACTER CAUGHT THE EYE OF THE COLLECTOR?: Like the rest of the Torchwood team, she has been helping keep the rest of society safe from alien invaders by using their own technology against them to try and prepare the 21st century in letting the rest of the world know that aliens do exist, and they're not always friendly.
THIRD-PERSON RPG SAMPLE: It was quiet in the place that Gwen had ended up, much too quiet. She wasn't used to it being this quiet. Even when there was no one around the Hub, it sort of hummed and made odd noises at night. When she was alone with Rhys at night, he tended to snore and make other weird noises. She wasn't sure the last time she'd heard anything this quiet. Of course she noticed that she wasn't in the Hub anymore. One moment there, and one moment here, wherever here was. And now she was surrounded by books on shelves as far as the eye could see. "Jack?" she ventured, glancing around. "Ianto?" But there was nothing, and no one answering her. Of course she was on her guard, her hand went to her gun, pulling it out but it didn't seem like there was any sign of movement what so ever.
At least she didn't automatically assume it was some weird practical joke. She'd seen far too much and experienced far too much not to assume that something very weird, and probably very dangerous was going on. Though she kept her gun trained in front of her, she finally took some steps around, to check out the place out as much as she could. There was still no one around. But then there was the noise, a faint creak that made her spin around as fast as she could. Nothing had moved, or had it? She could have sworn that the armor in the corner had just had it's arm raised up, but now it was down at it's side. Carefully she took another step forward towards it, and then she heard it again. There was no mistaking it now. Like in some odd horror movie, the suit of armor started to move, like it was filled. The only way she could tell that no one was inside was because one of them had the helmet upraised. Still, it didn't stop her from calling out, "What do you want?"
Just because it was sentient didn't mean that it could respond to her. It lurched in her direction and finally Gwen started to back up. They weren't coming after her per se, at least not yet, but they were definitely moving in her direction. She didn't bother shooting, she was pretty sure that guns weren't going to work on whatever it was. "I said, what do you want from me??" she was a bit more adamant now, a bit louder with her words. If they wanted to freak her out, they were doing a very good job of succeeding.
